There is a difference between savings and investment. Investment vehicles are higher-return capital appreciation while savings are more stable funds with lower returns. Fixed deposits would fall into the category of savings. The ultimate goal of savings is to provide for times of necessity or finance some future want. The goal of investment is to accumulate wealth. Fixed deposits provide security and stability for your funds. As a fixed-rate financial vehicle, it faces two risks; liquidity risk and purchasing power risk. These risks must be assessed in terms of your own financial planning to determine whether fixed deposits or similar plans can work for you.

Any fixed-rate investment would face purchasing power risk. This pertains to the real value of money over time. The interest rate on a fixed deposit is invariable or declared. Headline inflation fluctuates. If headline inflation over a period is higher than the interest rate on a plan, the fund would have a negative real rate of return. This suggests that it would actually have a lower purchasing power relative to when it was initially invested. To avoid this, a fixed deposit should be selected if it is likely to maintain an interested rate that can almost match or surpass headline inflation. The interest rate on a viable fixed deposit should never be below that of core inflation. Core inflation is based on headline inflation minus the impact of food price.

Liquidity risk is also a major concern when investing in fixed deposits. Most fixed deposits have surrender charges or penalties. Your funds would not be available without penalties until the fixed deposit matures. There are even fixed deposits with penalties on capital. These should be avoided generally unless they provide significantly higher interest rates than other available savings vehicles. Plans that do not promise loss of capital on surrender are ideal. Such plans reduce the risk involved in investing in a fixed deposit or a similar type of plan. Before placing a lump sum in a savings plan for a fixed period, one needs to ensure that one has enough liquidity. This means that you should have an adequate emergency fund and protection products. Protection products preclude the need to surrender fixed-period plans by providing income that is not earned when necessary.

The ideal fixed-rate savings plan preserves the real value of your funds, provides security and has minimal surrender charges. If you have a low risk-tolerance, then a fixed deposit plan may work for you. All you have to do is ensure that the interest rates can match headline inflation and that there are full guarantees on your investment. Failing this, it may be better to take more risk with your money in order to preserve its real value. Once they meet the criteria outlined here, fixed deposits can prove useful for investing retirement funds as well. Choosing the right type of savings plan can save you thousands of dollars more in the long run. Using a good fixed deposit alongside other capital appreciation vehicles is a manifestation of financial prudence, not conservatism.

A million dollars is a nice chunk of money and is definitely a usable amount of cash to gain an income from. Developing a strategy to achieve an income from $1 million dollars, you can’t do anything safer and more reliable with it than simply put it into a fixed term deposit at a bank.

Some would argue that placing it in government CD’s may be just as safe with a little higher returns but ultimately what you want is flexibility too, so putting it in the bank would ideally be the best way to earn an income.

At 7% per year, you could make $1400 dollars a week for the rest of your life, providing you do not spend the capital and just work with the interest to apply to life style. So, realistically, you are not rich with just a million dollars in cash. Sure a million dollars can buy you a lot of lifestyle, but once it is spent, you lose the permanent income which means going back to a full time job is a prospect.

A million dollars will give you a middle class lifestyle based on the returns, you may not have an affluent lifestyle at $1400 dollars a week, but then you don’t have to lift a finger to get that money. Another possibility would be to invest it in real estate, because the returns are historically double a benk term deposit. It depends on your capacities, because there is “purchase risk” you may pay too much, but historically, real estate appreciates at a rate of 7% and the rent roll is typically 7% so not only would you have the $1400 dollars a week to live on in cash, but also you will have a nice big capital gain after 20 years.

If you need money now, like I mean in the next hour, try what I did. I am making more money now than in my old business and you can too, read about Martin Thomas in the link below. When I joined I was skeptical for just ten seconds before I realized what this was. I was smiling from ear to ear and you will too.

You have heard the saying “Cash is King” and you should know how true that is! Cash is the oxygen for a business, it is what enables a business to keep trading and growing. Therefore to enable you to run a successful business, you need to understand the oxygen or cashflow of your own business. You need to know where your money is coming in from and where you are spending your money. By using cashflow management and forecasts, this will give you a key business accounting tool to enable you to know, understand and run your business effectively. By having a tight control on your cashflow, should an investment opportunity arise, you will have an idea whether your business can take it on and grow further, as well as keeping it above water during the tough economic times that we have recently been seeing. So what do you need to know and how do you manage your cashflow?

To make a profit for your business you need to be able to produce your product or service in advance of your customers paying you and therefore you need to ensure that you have the cash to support this. You need to ensure that your business has the ability to pay its associated bills on a regular basis and in a timely fashion and to do this you need to ensure you have a regular stream of cash. To be able to trade effectively and keep your business growing, you will need to build up a positive cash balance. Cashflow is the movement of money in and out of your business and is hugely dependent on timing.

How do you know and calculate what cash is available. Well to do this you need to add up any cash that is money available immediately to your business whether it be money on site (ie petty cash, payments to be banked), money in your bank account or short term deposit accounts, any unused bank overdrafts and short-term loans. It is the money that you can use immediately and not money that is tied up in a long term deposit account (this money is used for business growth and development) or invoices that have not been paid (debtors).

You need to keep constant check that the money you have available your cash in is greater than the bills you are paying to run your business or known as your cash out. Your business will need to build a higher cash balance for certain times in the month/quarter for when you will need to pay larger bills such as salaries, national insurance, VAT and other HMRC payments. By managing your cashflow using forecasting tools you will be able to identify if there is going to be a shortfall or if your business can spare some of its day to day money to invest.

To enable your business to succeed, you will want to reduce the amount of time between you delivering your goods or service and being paid. You can do this by creating a credit policy and payment terms which could mean that you charge interest for late payments, or offer discount for prompt payments. If you have a customer in trouble, it could be wise to negotiate regular payments. You will also want to ensure that you issue your invoices promptly and regularly and ensure that any debtors are continual chased and also controlled by using an aged debtor report.

By combining good management on your cashflow along with other key accounting aspects, such as income and expenditure controls you will be able to run a successful and growing business.
